Hospice Thornhill's palliative programs are designed to alleviate isolation, provide opportunities to engage with others in meaningful discussions, complementary therapies are available, clients can gain practical support and companionship during a difficult time.

Visiting Volunteers

Our specially trained Hospice Thornhill volunteers are caring and responsible individuals who provide non-medical support and in-home services to clients & their families within the Thornhill community.

Our clients & their families can expect to receive assistance such as transportation to medical appointments, running errands, shopping, a friendly visit, telephone call of support, or a moment over a cup of coffee. Our volunteers have their own special relationship with clients & their families.

Hospice Thornhill Volunteer services are free of charge and include:
  • In home support based on client and family needs, this support is provided with sensitivity and in accordance with client and family wishes.
  • Respite care which allows the family members a two to three hour break from care giving duties.
Hospice Thornhill Volunteers:
  • Respect client and family privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Care for people of all ages who are living with a life threatening illness.
  • Our volunteers are representative of the diverse cultural communities of Thornhill.

Gathering Place

This day respite program provides a weekly opportunity for those living with life-threatening illnesses to enjoy fellowship and activities as well as selected therapeutic treatments by accredited practitioners.

Our program varies and is built around each client’s interests. Speakers, choral groups special events & outings, have been enjoyed as well as seasonal celebrations. Programming on a regular basis includes: Art & Music therapy, assorted activities, crafts & games, Therapeutic Touch, Reflexology. We also offer our clients grief counseling. Transportation is provided when needed

Professionals and specially trained volunteers staff the day program.

The day respite program is offered free of charge to all area residents living with a life-threatening illness. The building is wheelchair accessible and conveniently located. All participants in the program require an assessment by Hospice Thornhill and the day program is by registration only.
